I finally reached Phil on the phone today. We talked for nearly an hour: all according to my line of questioning. He confirms that he never attended any wedding ceremony. In fact, he met my mother when she came back to America in 1960. Thus, he never met Catherine. But he admits that once, during a fit of rage against my father, she spat out the fact that he had made her abandon a child. Immediately after, she turned on Phil and made him feel guilty that he had heard such a thing. As Phil had seen many a fight between my parents, he adopted his usual tactic: keep the gasoline away from the fire. He never ended up prying further in this direction...
Phil confirms that my parents' relationship was stormy. Paul would explode, while my mother would seethe until she could not contain the pressure any longer...
And I just found a fax my mother wrote to Antony before coming for Arianna's birth. This was not filed with the other 'archives'...
